My first bachelor’s thesis, in communication sciences. It asks whether blockchains and democracy can be compared, and what each can do for the other. The first part rebuilds democracy from Athens to its modern liberal form, following Giovanni Sartori, and ends on democraticness, how far a system is democratic. The second describes blockchains: their history, the use cases that hold up, their limits.

The third brings the two together. Inside the blockchain, it looks at how Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tezos, Dfinity, Decred and EOS govern themselves, and argues that on-chain governance where only validators vote is still a democracy, of a higher or lower degree depending on who can become a validator. Inside a democracy, it looks at uses in the public sector and at the Italian debate. It closes asking for rules, based on facts rather than ideology. The thesis is in Italian.
